India is known for its rich cultural heritage. Classical dance is one of the essential arts that constitutes a vital part of Indian culture. Classical, folkloric dances and also music have a history of thousands of years . Some of these dances Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Odissi are very famous all over the world. The funny thing is that all these classic dances generally have the same 'mudras' or hand gestures as a common means of expression.

The genesis of these dances can be traced back to the famous sanskrit text - 'Natya Shastra'. Natya Shastra's first compilation dates back to the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE. These dances were originally practiced in temples for the purpose of entertaining various gods. Thus, he usually says that most of the classical dances were born in the temples. Although each dance style has evolved in different regions, its roots remain the same. Classical dances and their choreography since ancient times have been used in narrating mythological stories from generation to generation, and at the same time entertaining ordinary people.

Gradually, classical dances evolved and began to include the expressions and themes of social life, as well as the experiences of common life. It is often said that Lord Shiva, known for being the 'Nataraja' which means 'King of all dances', performs the cosmic dance which delicately balances life and death, and everything that happens in the universe in various cycles .

The Rasanubhuti or the experience of emotions is considered to be the maximum objective of these eight forms of dance. The Natya Shastra mentioned eight Rasas or . They are Shringar : Love, Hasya : Laughter, Karuna : Compassion, Raudra : Fury, Veer : Heroism, Bhayanak : Terrible, Bibhats : Disgust, Adbhoot : Wonderful, and Abhinav Gupta added a ninth; Shanta : Peace.

Classical dances focus on strict rules and techniques, whereas folk dances do not. The styles recognized by the Ministry of Culture are: Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam, Kathak, Kathakali, Odissi, Kuchipudi and Manipuri, etc. they all represent the countless stories of Indian culture.
